The Romans introduced the vine, then the Arabians brought the alembic (or pot still). Finally, the Celts developed the use of oak casks - a union which could only have occured in Gascony. Known for its therapeutic qualities since the Middle Ages, Armagnac experienced a boom in the 16th Century when it became widely consumed. Distillation and commercialisation then reached a peak in the 19th Century...

In 1909, the region of production was defined under the Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée. A decree dated august 6, 1936 specified the regulations governing Armagnac production.

Today, Armagnac has world-wide renown extending to 130 countries

The qualities and fullness of Armagnac are best enjoyed at the end of a good meal. Armagnac is also the bases of "Floc de Gascogne" (a fortified wine produced in the region) and many cocktails, and goes well with various fruits (prunes, cherries, etc...).

Finally, Armagnac is often used in cooking, for example in pastries, conserves and many main course dishes.
